Julie Freeman is a self-taught hyperrealist pastel artist who has refined her skills over the years. Her commitment to realism has earned significant national and international recognition. She holds Master Status with the International Association of Pastel Societies, is a Master Pastelist with Pastel Artists of New Zealand and Pastel Society of Australia and is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America
.
Julie’s passion for realism began in childhood and after working in coloured pencil and white charcoal for several years, she discovered pastels in 2009. Using soft pastel pencils and sticks, she broadened her subject matter and gained wider recognition. Her work aims to achieve realism beyond the photograph, drawing inspiration from her environment, using her own reference images.
Her subject matter includes animal and wildlife portraits, coastal and nautical scenes, native flora and fauna, and increasingly still life compositions, all of which have gained international attention. Julie’s work has received numerous awards and is held in private collections across the UK, USA, Australia, Taiwan, and New Zealand.
Julie’s artwork has been featured in leading publications, including Pastel Journal, Pastel World, Fine Art Connoisseur, Pratique des Arts, Colour Pencil Magazine, Richeson 75 International, Pastel – A Celebration, and NZ Artist Magazine.
In addition to creating her own art, Julie loves sharing her knowledge and skills with others. With her husband Michael she offers workshops upon request and provides private tuition from her studio in Auckland, helping aspiring artists to develop their own talents in the medium of pastels.
